RES (Renewable Energy Systems Canada Inc.) received approval from the Nova Scotia Office of the Minister of Environment and Climate Change for the proposed Eigg Mountain Wind Project in Antigonish County.

“We applaud the Minister and the assessment, which found that through compliance with the terms of conditions of the approval, we will mitigate any adverse or significant environmental effects related to the proposed wind project,” said Peter Clibbon, Senior Vice President, Development, RES in Canada.

Through community feedback and an independent environmental assessment, RES has taken action to address concerns related to species habitat. We are taking the following mitigation actions:

  • In our proposed turbine layout, we are avoiding placement in wetlands, watercourses, and old growth forests to avoid disturbing species’ natural habitats.
  • We have kept two turbines as alternates after reviewing their placement.
  • Based on Environment and Climate Change recommendations, we will begin baseline monitoring for certain species prior to construction.
  • We will complete additional wildlife studies and monitoring—including birds, bats, and Mainland Moose—before and after construction, and share results with regulators.
  • We will use an adaptive management approach so that, if monitoring identifies issues, additional mitigation measures can be implemented during operations.
  • Once the project is operational, we will continue monitoring species for two additional years and report our findings.
  • Whenever possible, we will use existing roads and avoid creating new ones.
  • RES will continue to seek community feedback through its Community Liaison Committee, which aims to engage the public as the project progresses.
